When the official games run out, the ROM hack scene is where Nuzlocking gets weird and wonderful. This list consolidates the three major community roundups — Nuzlocke University (June 2025), DualShockers (July 2025) and PokemonCoders — organized the way NU structures theirs: by difficulty tier.

A note on downloads

We don’t host or link ROMs or patches. ROM hacks live in a legal gray area — search the hack’s name on its official thread or the author’s page, and only patch ROMs of games you own.

Tier 1 — Just above normal difficulty

Good first hacks: new regions and rebalances without cruel design.

  • Pokémon Unbound — “may just be one of the cleanest and most polished ROM hacks out there” (DualShockers). The consensus top recommendation across lists.
  • Pokémon Gaia — “a great place to start” (DualShockers); a classic story-driven hack with modern mechanics.
  • Pokémon Emerald Seaglass — NU’s third pick in this tier, a gentler Emerald reimagining.

Tier 2 — Enhanced difficulty

The Drayano tier — one author defines this entire bracket:

  • Pokémon Renegade Platinum — the famous hard Platinum rebuild; NU maintains a dedicated Nuzlocke guide for it. See also our Platinum guide.
  • Pokémon Sacred Gold / Soul Silver — the HeartGold/SoulSilver enhancement.
  • Pokémon Blaze Black / Volt White — the Black/White enhancement.

Tier 3 — “I wanna be the very best”

The hardest Pokémon games ever made, per the 2025 community consensus:

  • Pokémon Emerald Kaizo — for years the community’s “hardest game to Nuzlocke.” Pokémon Challenges, the self-proclaimed best Nuzlocker in the world, needed 151 attempts to beat it.
  • Pokémon Run & Bun — as of 2025, NU reports it has surpassed Emerald Kaizo in most players’ eyes as the hardest Nuzlocke game.
  • Pokémon Radical Red (Hardcore mode) — the modern hard-mode staple.

Hacks with Nuzlocke built in

Some hacks ship the challenge as an actual game mode — no self-enforcement needed:

  • Pokémon Insurgence — “actually has a built-in Nuzlocke option” (DualShockers).
  • Radical Red and Polished Crystal also include built-in Nuzlocke toggles per the community lists; Nameless FireRed Project tops PokemonCoders’ list.

Also from DualShockers’ list: Pokémon Reborn — “completely changes the whole game by adding specific fields that redefine how battles happen,” and Polished Crystal — “more about the experience and allowing you to make your perfect team.”

How to choose

  • First hack ever: Unbound or Gaia.
  • Loved a specific official game: pick its Drayano enhancement (Renegade Platinum for Platinum fans).
  • Want the game to enforce the rules: Insurgence or Radical Red’s built-in modes.
  • Want to suffer: Run & Bun, then Emerald Kaizo — in that order, per the 2025 difficulty consensus.

Pair any of these with the Hardcore ruleset and a tracker that supports custom games, and you’ve got the full modern Nuzlocke experience.
