Before “Nuzlocke” was a challenge, it was a webcomic. Pokémon: Hard-Mode by Nick Franco — hosted on his official site, nuzlocke.com (online since 2010, copyright 2010–2026) — is the original Nuzlocke story and the reason the challenge exists.
What the comic is
Pokémon: Hard-Mode retells Franco’s own rule-restricted playthroughs: seeking a new challenge, he played with two extra rules — catch only the first encounter per area, and treat every faint as a death. The comic dramatizes those runs with a full story, characters and stakes that the games never supplied.
Three runs have been adapted so far:

The tone: this is not the anime
The comic is famous for treating the rules’ consequences honestly. TV Tropes’ entry highlights how the story refuses happy endings:
- Season 1 ends in defeat — Ruby loses the championship match against Steven, and the loss defines his character afterward (TV Tropes calls it a “Downer Ending”).
- The FireRed run ends in a Pyrrhic victory.
- In the White run, N flat-out calls the protagonist out for playing by rules that get his Pokémon killed.
That willingness to let deaths matter is exactly what made readers want to try the rules themselves.
How the comic named the challenge
The comic featured a recurring Seedot/Nuzleaf character drawn to resemble John Locke from LOST. Readers merged “Nuzleaf” + “Locke” and started calling the challenge the “Nuzlocke” — Franco himself still calls the runs “Hard-Modes.” The fan-made name won completely. The fan comic ecosystem
Hard-Mode spawned an entire genre of fan Nuzlocke comics — other players illustrating their own runs:
- nuzlockeforums.com hosts the long-running community hub, including a Completed Comic Runs archive.
- ComicFury and Webtoons Canvas host ongoing fan series (including Generation 1 retellings in the classic style).
- The best-known dark fan comic is It’s a Hard Life, a deliberately grim take where Pokémon death is constant — it still gets reaction videos as of 2026. (Its original DeviantArt-era posting location is unverified, so we link the discussion, not a mirror.)
